[scratch] I bought my 93 525i a little over a month ago. I wanted to change the oil so I would know what type and weight oil my car had in it. Apon completeing the service I filled the engine with 6.0 US quarts of Mobil1 synth oil. After running the engine about 2-3 mins I checked the oil level. The dipstick has two lines on it wich I assumed ment (top line)=full and (bottom line)= add a quart. well I checked the oil level and it was still below the bottom line! [scratch]. I consulted the ownes manual, and the DIY threads on this site and they all say the car only holds 6.1 US quarts of oil. Can someone tell me how I should be reading the dip stick. I dont want to over fill the engine and I really don t want to run it low.

Thanks

yes I checked the drain plug. I checked every else for leaks as well "nothing" so you're saying the M50 engine might hold seven quarts?

7 quarts is what I put in mine. This is coming from a guy that's been working on BMW's before I was born!! I'm 28 by the way

I would, first and foremost, leave the car for a good half-an-hour before you go checking the oil level. It takes a long time for all the oil to drain into the sump from the top of the engine. It has a long way to travel remember. I changed the oil in my car (it took 5 litres, as stated in the handbook) and the oil took a very long time to drain to the bottom. Don't go filling the car with more oil when you know it only takes 6 quarts. If that's what the book says then that's what the car takes! Overfilling your car with oil is a very bad thing to do.
