I just found out that I need to replace the catalytic converter on my 97 528i. The dealer quoted me $1100-$1200 . I also found out that my valve cover gasket is leaking. Right now I am not very happy with my BMW![?|] [:(!]

Go ahead and vent, we understand. [:(!]

I guess you bought the car used? On some cars and in some states the emission gear is warranted for 10 years. Check it out.

Valve cover gaskets are relatively easy to replace. Do you have mechanical aptitude?

Yes, I purchased the car used. It was still under warranty when I bought it, but I drive about 25k/yr so it is no longer under warranty. It does have 120k mi on it. I plan on changing out the valve cover gaskets myself. I have never done it, but I am pretty good a repairing things, so....

I found instructions on how to on www.e39.org.

I doubt Oklahoma has such "progressive" laws but I will check into it. Do you know how to find out?

I called europarts-sd.com - they quoted me $395.00 for an aftermarket CAT. BMW did say that there was a 100K warranty on the CAT. They also said that a lot of aftermarket CATs cause the check engine light to come on because of the different backpressure. Anyone had any experience with this?

By the way the cat for this car is a bolt on - no cut to be made.

Ever done an exhaust system with 120K miles on it? I have done a few. There is no such thing as bolt on, because you have to first get the old one off! That's the hard part.

Give it a shot but my hunch is that you will be driving to the local muffler shop anyway.

Dealers say a lot of things to keep business in their shops and out of the aftermarket...

Good luck.

Go with the catalytic converter that is $312 that Vance recommended. Buy it online and take it to a local Midas and have them do it...cheapest way to get it done, and this web site guarantees "OEM Direct Fit" and "No Welding or Cutting".

I would expect that $1200 is the price for the M5 exhaust from the cat back, not including the cat. They are expensive. You can get a cheap universal one, but I don't recommend it. If you check around you can probably find a quality aftermarket company, but I can't recall any at present.

Highflow Cats

Hey guys, this is always a fun topic. I own a '96 328is and I recenlty replaced both cats w/ Dynomax, high-flow racing pieces. The total cost w/ labor was around $550. The BMW shop wanted $900 to repalce 1 cat w/ oem.....lol I have noticed a louder deeper, tone w/ these cats [hihi] , BUT.... I have had a check engine light since day 4, now over a year. ECU still throws a Cat code at the techs [bash] I hope this isn't hendering the performance or reliability of my bimmer. Hope this helps, also any feedback would be great, thanks
